SQUADRA
Extending the Life of EV Batteries with Squadra
Currently, 99% of EV battery packs are dismantled and scrapped, even though many still retain around 80% of their capacity and have significant value. This practice increases the CO₂ footprint of these battery packs and conflicts with the ambition of a circular Netherlands. The challenge is substantial and will only grow as we approach 2030.
Squadra Machine Learning Company, together with a partner in the energy storage sector, is tackling this challenge by repurposing EV battery packs in energy storage systems. This approach extends battery lifespans by 30% and helps reduce grid congestion.
The Challenge of Battery Waste
Currently, there is no efficient method to quickly and accurately determine the state of health of used battery packs. This makes reuse often unprofitable and significantly increases the CO₂ footprint of these “sustainable” EV batteries.
At the same time, the Netherlands faces challenges with peak loads on the electricity grid, limiting industrial growth and the connection of new renewable energy sources.
Squadra is developing a groundbreaking solution to combat waste and enable the reuse of end-of-life EV batteries. Traditional methods to test a battery pack can take up to 24 hours, but Squadra is developing a test bench and smart software that reduces this process to just 10 minutes. Using machine learning, they can predict the optimal configuration and composition of different battery types to create effective and sustainable energy storage systems.
About MIT-R&D AI
To develop the software and carry out a pilot in a realistic environment, Ugoo, as a subsidy partner, submitted an application for the MIT R&D Collaborative AI Projects. This funding supports innovative collaborative projects in generative AI and machine learning.
The innovation aligns perfectly with the goals of these programs by reducing the CO₂ footprint of EV batteries and increasing the flexibility of the Dutch energy system. Squadra and its partner received a subsidy of over €280,000 to finance this development.
Ugoo x Squadra
